cures for sunburns
(14 Aug 2007)

Sunburn is a very common affliction generally suffered by those people who expose their skin to the harsh rays of the sun for a long period of time. While mild cases of sunburn are usually not a cause for concern, you could experience a lot of pain and discomfort in case your sunburn is quite strong. Moreover, it could cause your skin to turn red or bright red too.

Severe cases of sunburn could also lead to the formation of sunburn blisters on the skin. Therefore, in case you know that you are going to spend a while exposing your skin to the sun, then it is important for you to take the necessary steps for protecting your skin against the sunburn. Most skincare experts claim that the best way to avoid getting sunburned is by avoiding the harsh rays of the sun. However, people who have no other choice are strongly advised to take measures for protecting their skin and preventing sunburn. Even if you do happen to suffer from sunburn either because of inadequate preventative steps, or due to any other reason, you do not have to live with the pain and discomfort for a very long time. There are several methods that can be used to help heal a sunburn fast.

Cures for Sunburn

Most health experts advise people to use simple over the counter creams as well as certain natural remedies for sunburn. Given below are some of the most commonly used natural remedies for sunburn relief:
  • Aloe Vera leaves contain a natural gel, which can be very soothing, for skin that has been sunburned. This gel is easily extractible directly from a fresh Aloe Vera leaf. However, in case it is not possible for you to get your hands on these leaves, then you can also purchase commercial Aloe Vera gel from stores.
  • Vinegar can be very effective in soothing the skin, despite the fact that it has an offensive smell. It also keeps the pain and swelling away.
  • Cucumbers have a very cooling effect on the skin and therefore, when placed on the parts that have been affected by sunburn, cucumber slices could decrease the pain and discomfort.
  • Certain varieties of tea, such as black tea and green tea, can be very helpful in reducing the symptoms of sunburn. Moreover tea also contains anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it is excellent for sunburn.
  • Baking powder is an excellent home remedy for alleviating many skin conditions and symptoms. Sprinkling some baking powder into your bath will bring about immediate results.
  • Rubbing a few varieties of oil, such as Mustard oil, Emu oil and Lavender oil can help relieve sunburn and at the same time, soothe the skin. Apart from these oil types, it is not recommended that you apply any other form of grease, especially butter or heavy cream, as this could cause your skin pores to get blocked.
Anyone who is undergoing sunburn home treatment is required to drink a lot of water each day. This is because you can recover from the problem at a much faster pace, in case your body has an adequate amount of water. Therefore, please make sure that you hydrate and re-hydrate yourself at regular intervals during the day, thereby consuming more than 10 glasses of water each day.

The home cures for sunburn mentioned above are fairly safe, if used correctly and under the guidance of a skin care expert. However, when it comes to treating sunburn on face, it is best to seek professional guidance.
