  • Ginger: Using ginger for common cold treatment is one of the oldest common cold remedies.

Fresh ginger is an effective remedy for a cold, especially during the early stages of the cold. Ginger juice with honey or hot ginger tea with honey helps with the congestion caused by mucus and phlegm.
  • Turmeric: This is another effective remedy. Mix ½ teaspoon of fresh turmeric powder in 30 ml of warm milk, drink this once or twice a day for relief. If you have a runny nose, inhale the smoke of burning turmeric. This is among the popular common cold remedies.
  • Make a mixture of 5 ml of garlic juice with four black peppercorns, one clove, holy basil, and a teaspoon of honey. Drink this mixture twice a day.
  • Garlic: This has antibacterial and antibiotic properties and helps to alleviate the congestion. Crush a few pods of garlic and let them steep in a cup of hot water. Add some fresh lemon and honey to this and drink this mixture. Garlic soup is also an old remedy which could help with a severe cold. Make the soup by boiling 3-4 chopped cloves of garlic in a cup of water. The oil in garlic helps to open the respiratory passages.
  • If you want to clear a blocked nose, try the following remedy. Mix equal parts of water and natural apple cider vinegar. Boil this in a pan, when the fumes being to rise, lean over and inhale them.
  • Putting three drops of eucalyptus oil in each nostril. This will help to clear a stuffy nose as well.
  • Two Blocked Nose Remedies are: - An onion performs the same action that decongestants do. Simply cut an onion and sniff it deeply. This action will clear the blocked nose. Eating spicy food is a natural remedy for a stuffy nose. However, try this only if you need an instant remedy.
  • Lemon: Dilute the juice of one lemon in a glass of water. Add a teaspoon of honey to it and drink this once or twice daily. The Vitamin C in lemon helps with the cold.
  • Inhaling the steam of a mixture of hot water and 3 drops of peppermint oil has proved beneficial too. This is effective in the early stages.
