Home Remedies for Goiter

How can goiter treat
( 3 Sep 2010)

Goiter is essentially the enlargement of the thyroid gland – but is not cancerous. The condition is a rather common one to be suffering from and will generally cause heightened or low levels of the thyroid hormone production leading to conditions like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland itself is primarily concerned with the absorption of iodine from the food ingested and is very important because it is the only gland in the human body able to accomplish this task.

Although the enlarged gland in the case of goiter is painless, in cases of severe swelling the individual affected by the condition is likely to face some amount of difficulty when it comes to swallowing. One of the factors that plays a significant role in the development of a goiter is the fact that it shows no symptoms. The concerned person would therefore go undiagnosed unless signs are witnessed during an habitual medical test or medical tests being performed in order to identify the presence o some other condition. Once the goiter has developed and the swelling around the throat become apparent, some of the other complications that will also arise include frequent coughing, difficulty in breathing, discomfort around the throat and hoarseness in the voice.

Given the fact that the condition is a rather common one, there are a number of effective home remedies for goiter that have been tried and tested down the years from various parts of the world. One of the most effective home treatment for goiter is to have flax seeds ground and mixed water that is further heated for some time. You could then apply this over the area that is swollen. Once this has been done, make sure to cover it with the leaves from the tree and leave it over the course of the night. Another cure for goiter is to take tea, almonds along with a teaspoon of juice got from the leaves of some swamp cabbage and consume the mixture once or maybe twice daily for best results. Watercress is considered to be a very beneficial treatment and helps reduce the inflammation significantly because of the fact that it is a very good source of iodine. One should a paste of the herb and apply it over the affected area. You could even combine 2 tablespoons of watercress juice with water and consume this mixture regularly for a period of six weeks, thrice each day. If rice is a major part of the diet, make sure to choose the older varieties of rice rather than newer stock.
