A missed menstrual period is usually considered to be one of the early signs of pregnancy however there may also be a number of other factors and conditions that may result in a missed menstrual period. Amenorrhea is the medical term used by doctors to describe an absence of or a missed menstrual period. Sometimes, women who are going through peri-menopause which is the period just before menopause may also experience a missed period from time to time.
One of the causes of missed period is also lifestyle and emotional stress that a woman may experience. Missed period symptoms may be experienced by women because of extreme stress wherein the body tends to decrease the amount of a particular hormone which in turn prevents menstruation or ovulation. Similarly, a missed menstrual period may also be brought on by a short, sudden or even a longer illness which tends to temporarily delay ones periods. At times, even changing ones work schedules from day to working at night can throw off one’s body clock and result in a missed period. Being underweight or overweight is another one of the causes of a missed period. This is true because excess weight or being malnourished can shift ones cycle hormonally and in some extreme cases may even stop them for a prolonged period of time. Similarly besides being an early sign of pregnancy, a missed period may also be experienced by some women on account of change in ones medications resulting in an adverse reaction from one’s body. Missed period symptoms may be on account of a pregnancy as well which may be determined by a fairly simple pregnancy test.
A typical urine pregnancy test will determine if the concerned woman is pregnant or not by looking for the hGG hormone. In most cases small amount of hCG tends to enter the blood stream quite a few days after implantation has occurred which is also around 8-10 days before one ovulates and hence before a missed period. If one has a missed period on account of pregnancy then one may also need to look out for the other early signs of pregnancy such as nausea, dizziness and so on which may vary from woman to woman. Sometimes women may also show some missed period symptoms on account of high thyroid levels on account of the secretion of the thyroid glands. This may also result in the woman bloating or gaining weight.
