Medically termed as being conjunctivitis, pink eye is known to be one of the most common conditions affecting individuals of any age. The most prominent pink eye symptoms are a redness that develops within the whites of the eyes as well as an inflammation of the membranes that line the inner parts of the eyelids. Although the condition is unlikely to really hurt anybody, it is known to be substantially irritating and is known to feel like you have a piece of sand or some other foreign object lodged within the eye and have no way of getting it out.
Pink eye symptoms can be triggered by a number of causes and will usually be either of the viral or bacterial variety. The wide variety of causes of the condition can be further categorized into being infectious or non infectious. The effects of suffering from conjunctivitis, no matter how intense the pink eye symptoms are, are not long term and no complications will arise with an individual’s vision as a result of it. Some of the other prominent pink eye symptoms include eye pain, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light and a watery discharge from the eye that may contain pus.
The most common of pink eye causes amongst kids is from bacteria or viruses. These bacteria are too minute to be seen with the naked eye and are therefore, much harder to protect your child against. The most common method through which the condition is transferred from one person to another is through touch. The best way to guard against the condition is to regularly wash your hands with the help of warm and soapy water. One should remember that pink eye is contagious and the time taken for the condition to spread to the other person is not much. Children could be easily affected because of their weak immune system.
Because of the fact that the condition is so common, there are a number of home remedies that have been developed all over the world to help treat the condition. One should also remember that pink eye causes, treatment and symptoms are all inter related. One of the most effective pink eye home remedy options is eyewash made of chamomile flowers. Mix a couple of teaspoons of chamomile flowers and a single teaspoon of Oregon grape root in a couple of cups of boiling water. Allow this mixture to cool and the strain it and use the mixture as eyewash. Sliced potatoes are also known to be very useful when it comes to effective home remedies in the treatment of pink eye. The peeled slices of the potato has a cooling effect on the eyes, allowing the inflammation to subside along with the irritation that is likely to be present.
