Home Remedies for UTI

A UTI or urinary tract infection affects the urinary system and is caused due to a bacterial infection. This infection generally occurs only in the bladder, but if not treated properly it could spread to the kidneys and have serious consequences; it is therefore important that you also consider medical advice. One of the most practical steps you can take to remedy a UTI is to flush out the bacteria by drinking a lot of water through out the day.

To treat this infection at home it is recommended that you keep the acidity levels high in your body to stop the further growth of bacteria. The consumption of cranberry juice to achieve this has been in practice for more than a century as a home remedy for treating UTIs. Cranberry contains constituents known as proanthocyanins, which prevent bacteria from sticking and multiplying on the walls of the urinary tract, thus helping to wash them away.

Another remedy is the use of the herb uva ursi. The active ingredient in this herb is arbutin, which has antiseptic properties when it is broken down and excreted into the kidneys. However, pregnant and nursing women, and people suffering from liver disorders should not use this remedy.
