(23 Aug 2010)

An individual is known to suffer from sunburn after 15 minutes or more of continuous exposure to the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun. Mild sunburn may be observed in the form of pain, redness, slight swelling for three to seven days and may also be accompanied with the skin peeling off or being itchy.

One of the home remedies for sunburn relief includes soaking a soft cloth in some fresh yogurt or directly applying some yogurt on the sun burnt area.

The yogurt should be allowed to remain on the skin till its dries completely and then it should be rinsed off with some cold water. Yogurt is known to be effective against sunburns as it contains certain natural acids and enzymes that help sunburn. Another natural treatment for sunburn is to mix a few drops of lavender oil along with the yogurt and then apply this mixture to the affected area. This remedy tends to provide one relief from sunburn as the lavender oil soothes the skin whereas the yogurt will cool the skin down and also help in diminishing the redness and irritation. To gain relief from sunburn one may also place some chilled slices of cucumber on the spots that are sun burnt. This could then be followed with a bath in some warm water to which almost two cups of regular baking soda has already been added. Cucumber tends to cool and nourish the skin and thereby ensures that there is no further inflammation whereas baking soda prevents any further irritation and also neutralizes any possible infections. A highly effective natural remedy for sunburn is to dilute one part of tea tree oil with approximately ten parts of olive oil and then apply this mixture generously on the sun burnt area.

Tea tree oil is known to provide tremendous relief by soothing the skin and also prevent itching and peeling of the skin on account of the sunburn. Aloe vera is another natural product that is used as a healing ingredient for many ailments. One may use a product containing aloe Vera or directly apply some aloe vera gel on the skin to help it cool down immediately. Relief from sunburn can also be achieved by preparing a big pot of chamomile tea without adding any sugar to it. Once the tea has cooled down completely to room temperature, one should immerse a soft cloth into this pot of tea and then spread the liquid all over the affected area. If these remedies fail to show results you could consult your doctor on the issue and seek his help for the same.
