Heartburn is a rather common experience and is generally a rather painful feeling in the chest or throat when the acids within the stomach back up into the esophagus (a tube that carried the food from the mouth into the stomach). The condition is usually acute and will die down in a matter of minutes. When the condition happens more frequently, it can have a severe impact on the quality of a person’s life.
Also known as acid reflux, the condition can be caused by a number of factors. Some of the more common factors include excessive consumption of foods like caffeine which are known to increase the likelihood of suffering from heartburn. Chocolate, especially the ingredient theobromine, is known to allow the relaxation of the esophageal sphincter – thereby allowing the stomach acids to squirt up through the esophagus. Consumption of fired and fatty foods also plays a role because of the fact that they tend to slow down digestion and keep foods in the stomach longer. This increases the pressure on the stomach when new food is ingested, thereby simultaneously putting pressure on a weakened sphincter valve – causing the acids to squirt back into the esophagus. Alcohol is another common cause of heartburn as the substance is known to relax the sphincter muscle and also increase the production of stomach acid – making it a double edged sword. It is also important to point out that there are a number of emotional factors that are likely to cause heartburn. For example, excessive levels of stress and worry are known to cause the condition to occur while irregular and bad eating habits also play a role.
One of the best methods of relief from heartburn is to simply chew on some basil leaves. Alternatively, you could also suck on a small piece of jiggery while drinking a glass of chilled milk as this is also known to provide relief from heartburn. If you suffer from a rather recurrent version of the condition, you may want to chew on a few almonds to help provide relief from heartburn. While ginger root with honey, taken after every meal is considered to be one of the most effective heartburn home remedy options. Drinking plenty of water is one of the best methods of reducing a hyperacidity problem that is the root cause of the complications while increasing your intake of green, leafy vegetables is likely to be very beneficial. Heartburn relief during pregnancy should be strictly advised by your doctor in order to prevent any complications to the baby.
