Remedy for Headaches

Relief from Headaches
(20 Aug 2010)

A headache is classified as any pain felt around the head which is usually dull but can sometimes be sharp and debilitating. Headaches are a result of pain felt in the parts of the skull around the brain and not in the brain itself. This is because the brain surface does not have any pain sensors on it.

Headaches tend to reduce a person’s ability to perform normal daily tasks, particularly those tasks that involve cognition and the active use of the mind. Headaches can also cause a person to seek rest or medication and can be quite debilitating. There are many different causes for headaches and these may be related to the head itself or may be associated with other conditions that are affecting the individual at the time of the pain being felt in the head. A headache typically lasts for a couple of hours but more severe cases have been known to last for days after the condition has begun. Some people suggest that headaches are caused by optical issues such as watching too much television or constantly using a computer while others point to circulatory problems. Mild digestive issues sometimes cause headaches as do mild infections and illnesses. More obvious causes include full blown illnesses and diseases but these usually have other more severe symptoms that make the headache irrelevant. Headaches are also associated with stress and tension and may occur during periods where the individual is under pressure either related to personal or professional issues.

Because some headaches tend to be debilitating in their nature, headaches sufferers often seek relief from headaches. The first step in seeking relief from migraine headaches is to identify what the cause of the problem is. This may not be immediately evident to you in which case some generic remedies can be used. The most common remedy for relief from headaches is to take a pain killer but often, this exacerbates the condition rather than curing it. Resting for a few minutes may help provide relief from headaches, particularly if the headache is stress related. Headache sufferers should drink plenty of fluids especially water. Some people may need to sleep for a while before their headache passes. This is a good remedy for someone who is suffering from debilitating pain. A gentle head massage is helpful if the pain is felt to be closer to the surface and throbbing. This improves circulation and can help provide relief from headaches felt by individuals.
