Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Relief from Fatigue
(19 Aug 2010)

Fatigue is defined differently depending on the way in which the term is applied. In general conversation, the term fatigue is used to define a situation where a person feels excessively tired and is unable to regain energy for a considerable period of time after the physical exertion that has caused the fatigue has stopped. A person suffering from fatigue will be unable to perform tasks that would otherwise be considered as normal.

Fatigue may also refer to mental fatigue but that is another subject altogether. Fatigue is common; everyone suffers from it from time to time. It is usually experienced after a period of intense physical activity that has taken the individual beyond his or her physical capability. This capability could be related to the intensity of the physical exertion or the duration of the physical exertion but is usually related to both factors.

The first step when one is looking to get relief from fatigue is to stop the physical activity concerned. If it is possible, the subject should gradually wind down his or her activity rather than stopping immediately. This is not always possible, because in many cases, fatigue is felt so intensely that no activity can be performed without considerable discomfort. After the activity has been stopped, the subject should attempt to restore hydration. Hydration is important as it allows the body to cool down and also helps to regulate some of the body functions.

Fatigue is sometimes a result of improper nutrition, particularly during the time leading up to the period of physical exertion that has resulted in the fatigue. If an individual has realized that there is a nutritional deficiency then eating a meal may help provide relief from fatigue. Some instant relief from fatigue methods may be used such as consuming a glucose-based beverage or a glucose based food item. These provide short term relief for the body and also help to produce energy fairly quickly so that the debilitating feeling of fatigue can be somewhat reduced.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition where a patient experiences fatigue regularly even when heavy physical activity is avoided. This is a condition that occurs due to a lack of energy in the body in the first place and usually affects elderly people. A clinical diagnosis of this condition may be made and subsequent medication may be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Apart from the medical option, relief from fatigue can be earned by resting for a considerable period of time so that the body feels revitalized.
