Depression is a physical and mental disorder where a patient experiences long periods of a depressed or distressed state of mind. During these periods, a patient is unlikely to show any enthusiasm and may suffer from a lack of motivation to do even basic things like getting out of bed or eating meals. Because it is essentially a psychological condition, depression is often hard to diagnose because moods tend to vary from individual to individual.
The best way that one can describe depression as a medical condition is the situation where a person is in a continuous sad or distressed mood for a long period of time. This state of the person is very often coupled with the feeling of committing suicide or having no desire to live life. Depression can be dangerous as it tends to affect the person physically as well. Apart from the depressed mood, a patient may suffer from reduction in certain hormone levels due to the inactivity of the patient’s body and the lack of energy created as a result. There are several different methods of curing or treating depression, many of them involve therapy sessions and drugs that alter the brain chemistry.
Relief from depression is essential and the faster it is provided, the better. Depression can be cured easily if it is at the initial stage. For this reason, it is the responsibility of all people to notice changes in their family members that might suggest depression. Often depressed moods are taken for granted and the person suffering from depression may be left to deal with the condition on his or her own. This may be particularly harmful as the individual in a depressed mood is likely to be more depressed when not attended to.
Relief from depression may also involve the use of medication. This is after a patient has been diagnosed with clinical depression. Anti-depressant medication can be used to boost the patient’s mood artificially and provide a feeling of normalcy or wellbeing. Often, this is just the boost that is needed to bring a patient out of a phase of depression. There are many types of medication available to provide relief from depression. However medication should be prescribed by doctors, who do it based on the severity of the depression as judged by them.
Apart from medical options one can encourage physical activity as a way to achieve relief from depression. Exercise improves blood circulation and it has been found that subjects who exercise tend to suffer from less drastic relapses, if any, into depression.
