Treatment for severe and persistent cough and fever

severe coughing and fever for a long period of time
( 6 Jul 2006)

A cough is described as the removal of obstructive particles in the respiratory tract, particularly in the trachea, with substantial force and a distinct coughing sound. The trachea could be obstructed by any kind of foreign particle or phlegm, caused due to a cold or even by a food particle which has entered the trachea accidentally. A cough is a very normal mechanism of the human body used to ensure that the respiratory tract is always free of obstructions.

There are, however, some situations in which the cough increases in severity. The normal activities of the affected individual are disrupted by the coughing and can also develop complications leading to other problems. This condition is known as persistent cough. Coughing is normally accompanied by phlegm. This occurs due to the buildup of mucus in the lungs during a bout of cold.

When coughing is persistent over a long period of time, it could be symptomatic of a far more serious underlying condition. There is a possibility that the coughing is indicative of ailments such as bronchitis, pneumonia, influenza and even lung cancer. It is therefore extremely critical to consider medical assistance for persistent cough immediately.

There are some home remedies available that can be used to alleviate the symptoms of persistent cough. Take a tbsp of honey with some black pepper. This mixture is believed to be beneficial in treating coughs. You can also take a teaspoon of honey to prepare a solution with a pinch of ground white pepper which can be consumed twice or thrice daily, for about a week to provide relief from coughs. Honey can also be used in combination with onions to prepare the useful cough tonic. Take about 5 ml of freshly squeezed onion juice and mix it with 10 ml of honey. Consuming this tonic twice daily will offer you relief from the symptoms of cough.

Another remedy that is known to be effective is to brew a tea with ginger and drink it about four times, everyday. If you can ignore the taste and the odor, eating raw ginger is just as effective. Take a couple of teaspoons of pure turmeric powder in warm milk and consume this twice a day, if you’re suffering from a cough brought on by a bacterial infection. It is also a good idea to gargle your throat with a solution of warm water mixed with a lot of salt. Doing this frequently throughout the day is believed to be very beneficial.

If you have had a severe cough and fever for longer than one week, you need to seek the advice of a trained health care practitioner to determine the cause of your condition.  You symptoms could indicate a more serious lung condition which needs more aggressive treatment.
