Advice for white small patches

The reason your baby has small white patches on his cheeks is because he is probably suffering from a thrust infection, which is not uncommon in infants. Thrush is basically a superficial yeast infection, which makes the skin look lighter than the surrounding areas. It is caused due to the overgrowth of a fungi candida albicans, and though it not a serious disease it is important that you consult your doctor on advice to treat your child.

It generally occurs in babies due mishandling of pacifiers and rubber nipples or the passing on of the bacteria through the mother during the baby's descent through the birth passage.

Some of the ways to prevent it is to have your infant drink half an ounce of water that is boiled (but has been allowed to cool) or make him suck it through a piece of cotton that has been sterilized. Wash his cheeks with water after you finish feeding him. This causes the leftover milk in the baby's mouth and cheeks to be washed off, thus giving the bacteria a smaller chance of multiplying further.

Another preventive technique is to not allow other family members or relatives to touch the baby's mouth or the infected area. The infection also occurs on the baby's tongue, lips and the upper part of the mouth, and to treat this spread of infection you can use small amounts of milk of magnesia rubbed around the baby's mouth twice a day using a cotton swab.
