There are many people who suffer from a hordeolum, more commonly referred to as an eye stye. Resembling a boil or a pimple, an eye stye can appear in the form of a red pus-filled lump, close to the edge of the eyelid. The eye stye is more likely to appear on the outside of the eyelid, though in some cases, styes can also appear on the inner side of the lid.
This affliction normally gets resolved on its own within a week or two, without any treatment for stye on eyelid being required. However people could experience a lot of pain and discomfort due to which, they may use eye stye home remedies or even traditional treatment for getting rid of styes fast. Unfortunately, cases of recurrent styes are very common, which means that after getting rid of one stye, another pops up, within a short span of time. Therefore, it is best for people to understand what the possible triggers and causes of eye styes could be, so that they can be avoided.
Causes of Eye Styes
Lack of hygiene is the main factor that could expose the eyes to the bacteria, which can cause styes. Since the stye could cause the eye to feel itchy, people have the tendency to touch it over and over, thereby transferring the bacteria to the other parts of the eyelids. Another eye condition known as blepharitis could also lead to the formation of styes in the eye. In this case, it is important to first addressing the underlying condition, so that more styes do not crop up. Hence, before using any eye stye home remedies, it is best to identify the possible causes.
Treatment of Eye Stye
Most people choose to let an eye stye go away on its own, without following any specific treatment. Medical ways to get rid of a stye include antibiotic or, in some severe cases, surgery. The antibiotics need to be prescribed by a doctor, which can be in the form of a topical cream, eye drops or even pills. For those styes that do not burst or rupture on their own, it may be necessary to go through the lance and drain procedure. Alternately, eye stye home remedies are also an integral part of the treatment.
Eye Stye Home Remedies
There are several simple steps that can easily be followed at home, to easy the painful symptoms experienced and reduce the inflammation. Given below are a few simple eye stye home remedies that are known to be very effective:
- Boil around one teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cupful of water. Strain the seeds, making sure to preserve the water. This strained water should be used to wash the affected eye.
- Teabags are excellent when it comes to getting rid of an eye stye. However these teabags are not really required for making tea. Instead, the bag should be dipped in some water and the wet teabag should be placed over the eye, for around 8 to 10 minutes.
- Heat therapy, in the form of a warm washcloth should be placed over the eye, which not just alleviates the pain, but also soothes the inflammation
- People who wear contact lenses need to ensure that they wear glasses till the infection lasts, to prevent their lenses from getting contaminated.
- Eye makeup should be strictly avoided, till the eye heals completely, as it could cause the bacteria to spread
- It is essential to leave the stye alone. Popping the stye or trying to squeeze the pus from it could cause the problem to worsen.
The eye stye home remedies mentioned above are safe, if used under the guidance and supervision of a medical health care provider.

I know that this might sound a little bit crazy but I promise that it works. My mother had stys for the longest and everytime that she would get one she would go to the doc and he would give her this goopy eye cream and it never worked. She talked to one of her friends and they told her to get a sock and put some white rice in it and tie the end of it up, put the soc in the microwave and get it as hot as you can stand to put on your eye. When you put the hot rice on there somehow it draws out the infection, do this a couple times a day for a few days and the sty will dissapear.
