Jaundice refers to the yellow color of the skin. The yellow color is typically that of pigments in bilirubin. It may be caused by insufficiency of red blood cells, liver malfunction and/or bile duct obstructions. If the liver malfuction is due to hepatitis, then some forms of hepatitis may be passed through body fluids. Other causes for jaundice may include hemolytic anemia, malaria and pancreatic disfunction. So, the short answer is "jaundice, itself is not contagious --but the underlying disease which caused the jaundice may be." Dr. Karen Benton, NDwww.countrydoc.com
