( 5 Jul 2006)

Most people know what it is like to suffer from mosquito bites, mainly because they are so common. However, what most people do not realize is that one small mosquito bite can pose a major health hazard, since mosquitoes have been known to pass on blood-borne diseases, from one person to the other, through their bite. Several illnesses, such as malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis and dengue fever can occur after being bitten by a mosquito.

Therefore, taking the right steps for preventing mosquito bites is very important, especially in children, who spend time playing in the outdoors and are at a higher risk. There are certain mosquito repellent creams that are known to be effective. However, there are several parents who prefer opting for a natural mosquito repellent recipe.

Health experts claim that the best natural mosquito repellent is pure vanilla extract, which can be applied on the pulse points as well as the clothes. There are many essential oils that are also known to act as mosquito repellents. Some people recommend preventing mosquito bites with Vitamin B too. Preventing mosquito bites naturally could also mean covering the child up in protective and light-colored clothing as mosquitoes are usually attracted to dark colors. Unfortunately, it is not difficult for a mosquito to penetrate protective clothing to reach the skin and leave behind a painful and itchy mosquito bite. In such cases, most people use home remedies for mosquito bite, to alleviate the discomfort they experience.

Itching and infection are the two concerns you would be faced with.
  • Soon after you realize that you have got a mosquito bite, wash the infected area with soap (preferably antiseptic soap) and water. Keep the area clean and dry until irritation subsides.
OR
  • As soon as you realize you have a mosquito bite, moisten your skin  and rub an aspirin tablet over the bite. This is an unusual treatment but it helps control inflammation.
  • Avoid scratching. To counteract itching, make a sticky paste of baking soda and water. Apply it on the bite.
  • Try applying oatmeal paste, let it dry and wash off. This will prevent dryness from itch and scratch.
  • Calamine lotion can be applied to the affected area 2-3 times a day. This provides relief for 6-10 hours.
  • Caladryl lotion could be used.
