Running and abs
( 3 Aug 2010)

Running is a great exercise and most people run because they want to burn calories and stay fit.  Most of those who run also do so because they want a midsection that is firm and trim. You can lose weight by running and also strengthen your abs at the same time.

So how does running and abs development work? Running for abs development is a great idea as a person with great abs not only looks good, but is also in good health. Research shows that the amount of fat in a person’s midsection and his or her risk of developing diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are correlated. So if your abdominal muscles are visible it means that your belly fat is less and your risk for these diseases is low.

Running and abs development is a good idea as it also reflects positively on your running performance and results in fewer injuries. If you have well developed abs it means that your core musculature is well developed. Your pelvis, hips, and knees have an increased stability while running. This results in less chances of getting injured as the stress on your connective tissues and muscles is lessened. You are also able to run faster as the wasteful joint movements are minimized.

So what exactly constitute your abdominal muscles? These are the external obliques, rectus abdominus, transverse abdominus, and the internal obliques. Your abdominal muscles are positioned below your rib cage in your frontal midsection area.

Your abdominal muscles could be worked on by ensuring that you keep a good erect posture while you are running. Running and muscle building go hand in hand as you would also need to do some warm up exercises both before and after you run. Adding some sort of aerobic exercises to this will help you tone your midsection and increase your fitness levels. However, simply running and doing some abs exercises will not help you reduce abdominal fat. You have to combine this with a diet that is healthy.  Eliminating those extra calories that get converted into belly fat is important.  However, running and then eating fries and doughnuts all day long will not make your paunch vanish.

Combining running with aerobic and resistance exercises could give you the best results. Running and bodybuilding though seem to be unrelated, have a lot common with each other and serve many similar purposes. It’s very simple—your abs can be strengthened by running and if you have strong abs they will help you run better. You need to pay attention to your abs as they add stability to your body and help you as you engage in different types of physical activity.
