The commonly observed symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include bloating or gas, cramps or pain in the lower abdomen, changes in bowel habits, mucus in the stool, loss or appetite and so on. Some individuals suffering from irritable bowel syndrome may also suffer from diarrhea whereas others may not. Some of the major causes of irritable bowel syndrome are insufficient intake of fluids, irregular and unhealthy diet, stress, lack of physical exercise and other such activities.
It has been observed that most of the individuals suffering from irritable bowel syndrome tend to have a healthy digestive system but on the lining of their intestines tend to become extra sensitive to certain foods. This condition could then get further aggravated by stress. Relief from irritable bowel syndrome or IBS can be gained by making positive changes in ones lifestyle and diet. The changes and the benefits of the treatment for irritable bowel syndrome may not be immediate but the results are definitely long term and more permanent. Some of the home remedies for gaining relief from IBS include increasing the intake of foods that are rich in fiber such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. However one should gradually increase their fiber intake as though a fiber rich diet may prevent constipation a sudden increase may also cause pain and gas in the abdomen. One also needs to supplement a fiber rich diet with plenty of drinking water. Relief from irritable bowel syndrome can also be found by eating at a particular time as it aids proper bowel movements and also by never skipping any meals. Those who suffer from diarrhea as a result of irritable bowel syndrome should eat smaller meals at regular intervals to help minimize the symptom. Individuals suffering from irritable bowel syndrome should also avoid certain foods that may trigger the symptoms of this medical condition. These foods include tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, fatty foods, sweeteners such as sorbitol, fructose and so on. Those who are lactose intolerant should consume yogurt instead of milk in small quantities. Drinking plenty of fluids and water is also known to provide relief from irritable bowel syndrome; however aerated or carbonated drinks should be avoided as they tend to produce gas. One should also take time out for exercising regularly as it helps to reduce depression and stress and also promotes the healthy movement of the intestinal muscles. Some doctors may also recommend probiotic treatment to be incorporated in the diet of those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome which is the good bacteria that live in the intestine.
