Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition which in experienced in an individual in the form of numbness, pain and a tingling in the hands or fingers especially the index, middle, ring fingers or thumb. In some cases of carpal tunnel, the individual may even experience a loss of sensation in the fingers or a feeling of weakness in the hands. Carpal tunnel is mostly caused in individuals on account of repetitive use of one’s hands and fingers more so with improper positioning.
As a result, the nerve known as the median nerve gets compressed as it moves along the carpal tunnel. This is the narrow passageway of ligaments and bones which is present on the underside of the wrist. Carpal tunnel could also be a result of conditions such as pregnancy, obesity, arthritis, hypothyroidism and diabetes. There are various natural therapies for gaining relief from carpal tunnel and one of them, which is also highly recommended, is acupuncture. In acupuncture the acupuncturist will insert thin needles into specific acupuncture points in the body. This would include places like the arm, hands, thumb, wrist, neck, upper back and legs. The frequency of the acupuncture sessions will depend on the duration and intensity of the symptoms and the overall health of the individual. Acupressure is another treatment option to gain relief from carpal tunnel syndrome. This treatment is similar to acupuncture but instead of the insertion of needles, pressure is applied to these points to stimulate and promote the flow of blood to the hands and wrist. This would thereby ease the numbness and swelling in the related area. Some people may also suffer from carpal tunnel on account of a deficiency of vitamin B6. Hence increase in the intake of foods that are rich in vitamin B 6 such as avocadoes, sweet potatoes, sunflower seed, brown rice, chicken, pork, turkey, mangoes, bananas and so on. Yoga is also known to be beneficial is providing relief from carpal tunnel syndrome. The various yoga positions help in reduction of pain associated with carpal tunnel and also helps in the improvement of the grip strength of the individual. Temporary relief from carpal tunnel symptoms and pain is also found using steroid injections. However these injections should not be used as a long term solution for carpal tunnel syndrome. Relief from carpal tunnel can also be found with treatments such as deep tissue work and education about correct movement and posture.
