Question on diverticulitis

diverticulitis
( 7 Aug 2007)

Diverticulitis is a condition where small pouches (diverticula) form in the large intestine or the colon wall. There are weak spots in the colon and this is where the diverticula develop. The reason why these weak areas occur in-the colon is because of surfeit pressure.

Sometimes there is existing weakness inside the colon and this result in bulginess, which is called diverticula. The pressure inside the colon is increased and the number 1 common cause for this is constipation, which is caused by a too little fiber intake. Most of the diverticula form inside the patient’s sigmoid colon, which is the bottom left section of the sufferer’s large intestine.

Diverticulitis is a common condition in elderly people between the ages of 60 and 80, and the scariest part is that a tiny percentage of people living with the condition will show no symptoms. If you know that your daily fiber intake is low, it is not too late to do something about it. You can find great quantities of fiber in whole grain bread, bran cereals (around 45 percent), seeds and nuts, fruits, legumes, vegetables, and dietary supplements such as Metamucil and Citrucel. Diverticulitis is not sexist. Women and men are affected equally.
