The colon is a part of the intestinal system that lies towards the bottom end of the system. The colon is therefore one of the end parts of the human digestive system. Waste products pass through the colon and end up being disposed of during the act of defecation.

The term colon is used to define the entire length of the large intestine that begins with the cecum and ends in the anus. Waste product elimination is one of the important functions of the colon. The colon also functions to absorb moisture and minerals from the waste products being removed from the body. Defecation usually takes place once or twice a day during which time fecal matter is eliminated from the colon.

Colitis is a condition where the lining of the colon becomes inflamed. There are many different types of colitis which differ based on the factors that cause the condition and on the type of condition that is affecting the patient. There are some common signs and symptoms of colitis such that apply to all forms of this condition. All forms of colitis will cause inflammation in the colon. Patients will all describe some amount of pain or discomfort accompanied by diarrhea. In some cases, the stools may be bloody while in others there may not be any visible blood.

What causes colitis is a question that could be very bothersome. To understand the causes as also treatment it is necessary to first know the different types of colitis. Infectious colitis may be caused by bacterial infestation in the colon. Bacteria reside in the colon under normal circumstances. However, infectious colitis occurs as a result of excessive bacterial presence in the area. Another one of the common types of colitis is ischemic colitis. This is a condition where the area suffers from a decrease in blood supply. Blood supply is essential for all parts of the body to be properly nourished. When nourishment is reduced because of deficient blood supply, the colon will be weakened. Inflammation may result and the inflamed colon may also be prone to bleeding because of tears in the weakened lining. Finally, we come to the category of inflammatory bowel diseases. Ulcerative colitis is one of the types of colitis that falls in this category. In this type of condition, the body’s immune system tends to attack the colon and damage it. This type of auto-immune colitis is difficult to treat as conditions of this type tend to go through phases of virtually no symptoms followed by phases of extreme symptoms.

One of the important home remedies when dealing with colitis is diet. When one follows a good diet, it becomes much easier to deal with colitis. The best diet for colitis is a diet that is rich in nutrition and balanced. A balanced diet is good for health in any case. When an individual suffers from colitis, it becomes more important for him or her to consume foods that are easy to digest and easy to handle. Foods which are easy to digest also help with the maintenance of general health.

The best diet for colitis is one that has plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fiber in them. These foods are also non-spicy and tend not to affect the digestive system in any adverse way. Heavy fruits such as mangoes may be avoided, but most other fruits like apples, bananas and pears should be consumed regularly. Bananas are especially useful for providing energy as well as for improving the process of digestion. The best diet for colitis also depends on the patient. Some patients react differently to different kinds of foods which makes it necessary for them to define their own colitis diet based on trial and error.
