Type 2 Diabetes Complications

Walking and diabetes
(20 Jul 2010)

Diabetes is a chronic state of improper glucose balance in the body. It may be of following two types:
  • Diabetes Mellitus Type I: In this case, pancreas does not produce sufficient amounts of insulin for the breakdown, absorption, and assimilation of glucose, which causes an increase in blood glucose level.
  • Diabetes Mellitus Type II: In this type if diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin and as such, despite the secretion of insulin in sufficient amounts, the blood glucose level increases.

There are various causes of diabetes which include genetic transmission of the disease, certain infections, excessive intake of glucose, and certain medications. One of the other causes of diabetes is excessive weight or obesity.

Obesity curtails the ability of your body to retain normal sugar levels by making the insulin-specific receptors insensitive to the enzyme. As such, obesity leads to diabetes mellitus type II. The symptoms of diabetes caused by increased weight include frequent urination or polyuria, increased thirst or polydipsia, and enhanced hunger or polyphagia.

The best way to relieve diabetes mellitus type II is to reduce weight. Weight gain in today’s era is caused by our faulty lifestyles and faulty eating habits. The sedentary nature of jobs and lack of physical exercise further contributes to weight gain and obesity.
Walking and Diabetes

One of the best ways to reduce weight is walking. Walking is a simple exercise which is apt for all age groups and even for people with some physical illness. Research has proven that walking for two and a half hours a week reduces 13 to 15 pounds in a year. Walking keeps your body in constant fat burning mode, which nullifies the calorie intake and keeps a check on weight gain. Walking enhances the rate of the metabolism, which prevents the accumulation of fats in the body. It also averts ailments of the digestive system like constipation.

People with diabetes are at an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. As such, walking also helps reduce the proneness of heart diseases like hypertension, arteriosclerosis, heart attack, and other diseases involving the circulatory system.

Walking coupled with a balanced diet is the best way to keep a check on sugar levels in the body. You must control your intake of sugar and are advised not to consume foods rich in carbohydrates and fats. Also, you must not eat canned and junk foods. You should also refrain from consuming alcohol.

Do consult a doctor to diagnose the cause of diabetes and then take the prescribed treatment.
