Walking and Calories Burned

Walking and Calories
(20 Jul 2010)

In today’s fast moving world, it is an established fact that fitness levels are really low. People tend to eat junk and processed foods, which are extremely high on calories. Moreover, the sedentary nature of our work and the lack of physical activity make us even more prone to weight gain.

Weight gain leads to numerous problems like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, the risk of cardio vascular diseases and many more afflictions. Therefore, it is important to balance the intake and utilization, or burning, of calories to keep a check on your weight and avert numerous ailments associated with weight gain.

One of the best ways to reduce weight is walking.  Walking and calories are closely related. Walking is a simple exercise which can be the first step to begin an exercise regime and follow stringent fitness schedules. Walking and burning fat are strongly related, and walking is a great way to get fit.

Some of the reasons why walking and burning calories are so connected are:
  • Walking helps in attaining a state of constant fat burning, in which the fats are being burned continuously, even at rest. This nullifies the effect of calorie intake during the day.
  • Walking helps elevate the rate of metabolism, which helps in quick digestion, absorption and assimilation of food. This, in turn, helps burn calories and helps retain the calorie balance.
  • Walking also helps in preventing other afflictions of the digestive system like constipation. This also helps control body weight.
  • Walking is an aerobic exercise which helps burn calories, which, in turn, helps reduce the content of cholesterol in the body. This reduces the risk of heart diseases like hypertension, blockage of blood vessels and even cardiac disease.
  • Walking burns calories and glucose, thereby maintaining the normal level of sugar in blood. This helps prevent diabetes.

If you are a sedentary worker, you are advised to make it a routine to walk for at least 20 minutes a day. Research on correlation of walking and weight loss has shown that walking for two and a half hours a week reduces the body weight by 13-15 pounds. As such, walking is a wonderful exercise, and you would easily see the correlation between walking and calories burned.

In fact, walking is such a simple exercise that even if you have some medical problem, you can still walk, as walking does not lead to exertion or immediate strain.

You are advised to couple walking with a balanced diet plan and a bit of weight training. You can also practice meditation or yoga and also deploy alternative therapies like aromatherapy.
