Oily Skin Remedy

Skin Care for Oily Skin
(20 Jul 2010)

Symptoms: In people with oily skin, the sebaceous glands are over active, thereby producing more oil than is required. This makes the skin look greasy, shiny and dull. The pores may be enlarged, and more prone to blackheads, pimples, acne and various other blemishes.

The skin may also look coarse.

Causes: Oily skin may have diverse causes, ranging from heredity to a hot and humid weather. Pregnancy and teenage years are times when there is a drastic change in hormone levels and these may also cause oily skin. Certain cosmetics or medications (like birth control pills) could lead to oily skin. Another culprit could be a faulty diet with too much of oily, greasy and fried foods.

Skin Care Tips: Here are some tips for skin care of oily skin.

One of the basic rules for skin care of oily skin is to cleanse two or three times every day using mild soap and water. It is best to use tepid water. Do not use harsh soaps or very hot water. Hot water could strip the skin of its natural oils, while very cold water can shock the skin. Hot water could also lead to a condition called reactive seborrhea, in which the oil glands work faster and produce more oil.

Your dermatologist may give you the names of special products for skin care for oily skin. These cosmetics, which may include sunscreens, hair removers, moisturizers or face creams, are usually oil free, thus preventing clogging of the skin pores. You may try products which contain retinoids. This is a drug which shrinks the size of the oil glands and thus reduces production of oil.

Applying some astringent, before doing your make-up, will also help in reducing oily skin. Washing your face with cool water mixed with a few drops of eau-de-cologne may also help to make your face less oily. Lime juice and cucumber juice are especially beneficial for oily skin. You can apply some on your face, and wash off after 15 minutes. You may add a few drops of the juice to your bath water. A tablespoon of apple juice mixed with a few drops of lime juice also helps to make your skin feel less oily.

Skin care for oily skin would also include applying some natural face packs and masks. Egg white mixed with a teaspoon of honey can be applied and left on for 15 minutes before washing off.  Face packs of mashed tomato and cucumber are also beneficial.

Avoid too much butter and cheese. Include lots of vegetables and fruit, and start your day with a glass of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of lime juice.
