Causes and cure for dark eyelids



Discoloration of the skin around the eyes or on the eyelids is something which most people experience at some point in their lives. While this may be due to illness, allergies, or tiredness, it is important to identify the exact cause and take proper remedial action.

Dark eyelids are a skin condition wherein the skin on the eyelids is darker than normal. The skin becomes progressively darker as you approach the nose. This condition is similar to the dark circles that form under the eyes. The skin appears bluish purple when the eyelids turn dark, giving the face an unhealthy appearance.

The skin on the eyelids and around the eyes is very thin and any problems with your health or an unhealthy lifestyle would reflect on the eyelids. However, dark eyelids could also be hereditary. In such cases, the muscle that underlines the eyelids is dark purple in color and is visible through the thin skin as being bluish purple. The veins that carry blood vessels make it seem darker. At times, dark eyelids could be caused by the capillaries that are leaky. This causes the blood vessels to ooze out making the outer skin appear bluish black. The other causes for dark eyelids may be eye strain, constant stress, and fatigue. Dark eyelids could also be a symptom of some illnesses and would thus require medication. A deficiency of minerals and vitamins can also cause dark eyelids. Seasonal sickness like hay fever would also be a reason for dark eyelids.

In case of seasonal sickness or allergies, it is beneficial to use prescribed medication to get rid of dark eyelids. One common cause for allergy is gluten. The cure for dark eyelids does not happen in a day. It is also important to eat a healthy diet each day. Consuming a wholesome diet which supplies essential nutrients such as vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin A, calcium, and zinc will help you stay healthy and also provide relief from dark eyelids. Drink plenty of water, fruit, and vegetable juices to flush toxins from the body and improve blood circulation. In case there is a deficiency of vitamins, take multi-vitamin supplements.

If you are under stress, make it a point to take the time to relax. You can place cucumber slices on the eyelids and take a break from work for five to ten minutes. This is highly useful as cucumber will cool your eyelids and also help you relax. The juice or slices of potato, tomato, lemon or cool tea bags would help reduce the darkness of the eyelids. Dip a washcloth in cold water, squeeze the water, and place it on the eyes when you go to sleep. Exercise regularly and get sufficient sleep to reduce dark eyelids or any puffiness. You could also use eye creams that contain vitamin K and retinol.
