Nutrition for diabetic

A diet chart for any complication is prescribed on the basis of activity pattern, in addition to age and gender. A therapeutic diet is a modification of a normal diet pattern. Inadequate information regarding your present dietary pattern is available.

Diet plays a vital role in maintenance of blood sugar levels, in addition to medication and exercise. Ideal body weight is the ultimate target of treatment, along with reduction in blood sugar levels. The height, weight and nature of diabetes is also essential to decide on the calories recommended.

The fibre intake is around forty grams per day, as a high fibre diet helps in reducing the sugar levels. Consume 4-5 small meals. This also helps in preventing extreme cases of sugar levels, namely hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Fast foods and processed foods are replaced by fresh vegetables and fruits. Tubers are not recommended. Avoid fruits, such as mangoes, jackfruit, chikkoo and go in for apple, orange and papaya. Carbohydrate intake is moderate. Matching meal times with insulin administration is important. Avoid feasting or fasting. Fried and junk foods are avoided. Carbonated beverages are not advised.  More information on diabetic diet is available.
