Natural Cures for Lice

How can you treat lice?
(16 Apr 2010)

The prospect of a head lice infestation can seem gross and disturbing to many people, but it is in fact a very common problem. It’s not necessarily a problem of poor hygiene, although hygiene does have a lot do with it; it is however easily spread in conditions of overcrowding or in other environments where you are required to work in close proximity to others. A lice problem is not really very threatening and does not pose great risk, but it is one that creeps us out, because the very thought of creepy crawlies living on our scalp does send shivers down the spine.

The main problem from an infestation however is the irritation that accompanies the infestation. Most of the irritation is owed to an allergic reaction and this in its turn poses a high risk as scratching at the area can result in bruising and lesions that could be a source of bacterial infection.

Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that feed on blood drawn from the scalp. They don’t pose any direct risk, but as mentioned the risk comes from scratching. The problem of head lice is most common among children because of the lower awareness of hygiene among kids, and because of the larger amounts of time they spend in the company of other kids at school, and also the close proximity to each other. Head lice are highly contagious and can spread very easily. The one clear advantage however, is that they cannot survive for long of a host.

Head lice can be treated quite effectively with most over the counter medicated anti lice shampoos solution. These are extremely effective and will help get rid of the problem once and for all. It is however absolutely essential that you follow the instructions listed meticulously. It is not advisable to try using any home made preparations or other home remedies as treatment for the problem as most such remedies are ineffective e or show varying results. Unsuccessful treatments unfortunately only mean that the infestation worsens and becomes more persistent, and is also given more time to spread. Use medicated shampoos and try and follow these simple tips to do away with the problem effectively:
Wash all bed linen, clothing, and any materials worn by the infected in boiling hot water. Any clothes that cannot be washed in this manner should be sent for dry cleaning. Items like soft toys and pillows should also be cleansed and may need to be sent for dry cleaning. Any head gear or combs and brushes should be washed thoroughly with the medicated shampoo.
