The supplement Aesculus also know as Horse chestnut (HCSE) is generally considered safe if taken in recommended doses for a short period of time. The use of Standardized HCSE is considered safe in adults, stomach upset and headaches have been reported and therefore its use is not recommended for children.

Horse chestnut might increase the chance of bleeding. Patients with a history of bleeding disorders or consuming drugs that might increase the risk of bleeding are cautioned about the use of HCSE.

It is not advisable to ingest unprocessed horse chestnut seeds, such as the seeds, bark, and flowers as it contains esculin, which could prove fatal due to significant toxicity. Symptoms associated with raw horse chestnut are poisoning include headache, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle twitching or even coma and paralysis.
