Diverticulosis is a relatively common condition that is more prevalent among those past the age of 40. This condition develops when small protruding sacs form on the inner lining of the intestine, known as ddiverticula. They often develop in the colon and the condition of diverticulitis is said to set in when they get inflamed.
The sacs or pockets that develop as a root cause of the problem are formed as a result of intense pressure in the colon that causes them to bulge out further.
Although the formation of diverticula is very common, particularly among the aged, the condition of diverticulitis only develops in a small percentage of those affected. It actually occurs as a result of inflammation or due to the appearance of a tear in the diverticulum. This can be problematic if the tear is large as it means that wastes from the colon can escape into the abdominal cavity. You then have an infection or abscess and inflammation in the abdomen. The biggest risk factor for the development of the condition is an unhealthy diet or one that is deficient in fiber. For this reason the condition is largely prevalent in the developed world where diets are high in fats and low in fiber.
The condition doesn’t necessarily cause symptoms and is usually found in a routine colonoscopy, but at times there could be symptoms like abdominal cramping (particularly towards the lower left side), pain in the abdomen on touching it, bloating, nausea, belching and bloating, changes in stools (either diarrhea or constipation), fever, fatigue, and possibly blood in the stools.
The good news is that diverticulitis can be treated quite effectively with some simple natural remedies and home treatments. Most of these are by the way of dietary modifications:
- Bulk up your diet with high fiber foods like whole cereals and other whole meal products. Fresh fruits are a great source of dietary fiber and so are vegetable. Try and include large servings of fresh fruit and vegetable salads in all meals.
- Make sure that you follow a disciplined routine, with regular meal times and always make it a point to chew your food slowly and thoroughly. This ensures more efficient digestion, and reduces the stress on you digestive system.
- Fluid intake should also be increased and this would constitute of water, fresh fruit juices, and milk. Artificial or synthetic juices and carbonated or caffeinated drinks should in fact be eliminated.
- Avoid consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking, and cut down on fatty foods and red meats.
- Try and get at least some light exercise daily. Even a ten minute walk to and fro your neighborhood store would do you a lot of good.
- Sit it out patiently on the commode and don’t strain.
