Symptoms of Vaginitis

What is vaginitis? What are its symptoms?
(24 Mar 2010)

Vaginitis is one of the most common gynecologic problems faced by women today and is characterized by symptoms that include a considerably itching sensation present around the genital area, a vaginal discharge that emits a foul odor, significant discomfort or burning sensation during urination, a little pain during sexual intercourse as well as n inflammation and redness present around the vagina. Vaginitis is extremely common in adult women and is the main cause of almost about 10 million doctor visits every year in the United States of America alone. About 50% of the cases are caused by bacterial infections while candidiasis and trichomoniasis account for about 25% and 25% respectively.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection that normally affects women of childbearing age and is characterized by a thick, white vaginal discharge. The symptoms of this condition will usually become more prominent just before the onset of menses. This condition is not usually contracted from a sexual partner and about 75% of all women will experience it at least once during the entire course of their lives. Trichmoniasis is often directly linked to the factors that influence other sexually transmitted diseases such as a history of multiple sexual partners. It is characterized by a frothy discharge along with some localized pain and irritation. If the infection occurs during a pregnancy, it is likely to end in a preterm delivery or even a low birth weight infant. Bacterial vaginitis is the most common form of the condition and does not necessarily have to show symptoms of a discharge. Bacterial vaginitis in a pregnant woman may result in a preterm birth.

Vaginitis can best be treated by following few rules of hygiene in your daily life. For example, making sure that you wash your undergarments separately without mixing them with the other clothes will prevent the bacteria or infecting organism to create complications in other parts of your body. Yogurt is extremely beneficial in treating any kind of vaginal infection and should be applied topically over the affected area. Eating about one bowl of yogurt on a daily basis will help speed up the recovery as well. Cranberry juice and consumption of the fruit helps to fight off bacteria attacks anywhere in the body, thereby making it a very useful remedy for vaginitis. Avoid wearing any undergarments during the night so as to allow the vaginal area to get fresh air and allow the skin in the area to breathe properly.
