Health advice for Breathlessness

Shortness of breath
(19 Jun 2007)

Breathlessness or shortness of breath may occur due to illnesses which affect the chest such as respiratory infections and asthma. If you suffer from excessive stress and panic and anxiety attacks you could also be affected by breathlessness during these periods. Individuals who are overweight often experience shortness of breath due to their low fitness levels.

Do consult your doctor if you experience unexplained and sudden breathlessness. You can try out the following home remedies for breathlessness.
  • Make sure that your diet is healthy and consists of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, Restrict your consumption of red meat and dairy foods. Also ask your doctor if you need to take any nutritional supplements.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine and quit smoking.
  • If you suffer from bronchial congestion, mix equal quantities of garlic, honey and crystallized ginger with a few drops of lemon juice. Eat this whenever you have an asthma attack or a bout of breathlessness. You can even add fenugreek to honey and ginger juice as it is a good expectorant.
  • Add half a teaspoon of black pepper and three teabags to two cups of hot water. Steep for some time and then drink. This will help to open up the bronchial tubes. Ensure that you strain the tea properly to remove any pepper or loose tea leaves.
  • Take a brisk walk daily to improve your endurance. Remember to breathe through the nose and use your abdominal muscles to inhale and exhale. This ensures deeper breathing and a greater supply of oxygen to your lungs.
