Tips to improve memory

not able to retain information learning etc
(19 Jun 2007)

There are two possibilities if you’re unable to learn new tasks or if you are becoming forgetful. You are not being attentive enough and absorbing the information you receive, or you suffer from a physical or mental condition that's affecting your memory. Diseases like ADHD, Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia, and hypoglycemia have adverse effects on the brain.

There are also problems like depression, anxiety, severe anemia, and alcohol or substance abuse that play a role in mental inactivity too. Did you recently suffer a head injury, or a severe viral illness? Or have you been on some medications? These could also be some of the reasons. Your condition may be just a result of severe lack of sleep or a change in your sleeping routine. Start getting about 8 hours of sound sleep every night, and you may see an improvement in your condition. A nutritional deficiency is also what we tend to overlook when it concerns the matters of the mind. If you are not getting enough essential fatty acids, your brain will work slower. So, avoid crash diets, and consume enough essential fats.

There are many ways in which you can alleviate the problem of weak memory and learning abilities. Firstly, pay attention to your diet. There are many foods that promote mental power. Pistachios are rich in thiamine, the deficiency of which can also result in memory problems. Have ¼ cup of pistachios every morning. It would also be beneficial if your breakfast includes 1 handful oats, 1 cup of milk with one teaspoon honey, 3 chopped dates and 3 chopped nuts. Mix all these products and eat it with one unpeeled apple. Some other foods that will also help you are artichokes, onion, liver, eggs, carrots, okra, and blueberries. Have fish oil capsules, as Omega3 fatty acids can help grow new brain cells.

There are many ways in which you can remain mentally active and keep most mental conditions at bay even when you grow old. Try to be as stress free as possible. For that, you can use aromatherapy. Draw a calming bath with a few drops of oils of lavender or sandalwood added to it and relax in it for 20 minutes everyday. Drink herbal teas like sage, rosemary, or basil. Let ¼ teaspoon of any of these teas steep in a cup of boiling water for five minutes. Or, add any essential oil to olive oil and massage your forehead and neck. You can also solve puzzles everyday to keep your brain active.

Exercises, such as aerobics, treadmill and meditation are effective in improving the blood flow to the brain, thereby enhancing memory. Forming acronyms, by forming a word , out of the first letters from a set of words is helpful. Acrostics can be formed by using the same initial letters to make a sentence. Rhymes or songs can be very helpful. Try to concentrate on what others speak or on what you read.
