Acne is a common affliction among people, particularly teenagers. Acne appears as blemishes, lesions or pimples on the skin on account of excessive production of sebum or oil which in turn is attributed to the malfunctioning of the sebaceous glands on the skin. The areas most affected by acne are the face and upper parts of the chest and back where the density of sebaceous glands is highest.

Acne is caused by a variety of factors like hereditary reasons, pollution, lack of nutrition, attainment of puberty, and many more.

There are many home remedies to cure acne but one of the majorly used remedies to treat acne is the use of garlic. Garlic is a potent skin cleanser and can remove the toughest of scars and blemishes on the skin. Garlic is one of the richest antibiotics of natural origin and is also rich in sulfur content. The sulfur content of garlic serves to cure acne. Sulfur is supposedly a potent keratolytic agent which promotes the shedding of dead cells, which may otherwise block the pores on the skin. Also, sulfur is a comedolytic agent that helps in healing the already existing lesions or comedones, and averts the formation of new ones. As such, garlic is an effective remedy to cure acne and acne marks. You may apply freshly cut garlic slices on the affected areas of your skin to relieve acne. You may also squash garlic and mix it in warm water to prepare a decoction. You may apply this garlic decoction on your skin with a cotton cloth.

You may also eat garlic slices on an empty stomach in the morning, or use it in culinary preparations to treat scars caused by acne. A regular intake of garlic purifies the blood which improves the oxygen supply to cells of the body, thereby helping fight the acne better. Garlic is known for its pungent and strong smell which may hinder its usage. In order to ameliorate the smell of garlic, you can soak the slices of garlic in milk for about an hour before you consume it. This will help remove the smell of garlic, while retaining its medicinal properties.
You may also use other remedies to cure acne, such as lavender essential oil in olive oil, or lemon and tomato to cure acne and acne marks. If, in spite of these home remedies, you do not find any improvements in the condition of your acne, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist.
