Every baby and newborn has a sensitive, thin skin making it prone to dryness. Lack of sebum on the skin is the key reason for rashes, and your baby’s skin cannot produce as much sebum as adults do. Sebum is a thin wax like oily substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands in our skin.

Its primary purpose is to protect our skin from rashes and dryness by making it waterproof. Prevention is always better than cure when you are dealing with issues related to dry skin in your baby. You will find a variety of moisturizing creams and medications to treat dry skin. However, before we get into the cure, it is important for you to understand the reasons for this condition.
Rashes and dry skin in babies occur due to a varied combination of environmental and physical conditions. Some of the common reasons for dry skin are:
  • Bathing in excessively hot water: Your baby’s skin cannot withstand hot water. Hot water has a tendency to wash away the protective sebum from the skin. It is recommended to use water that is slightly warm to bathe the baby, and ensure that the water is not too hot.
  • Hot and Cold Weather: Extreme variations in the weather can result in dry skin. Harsh sun can make the skin dry, so does cold winter air. It is recommended that you shield your baby from hot sun and wrap the baby in soft protective winter clothing when it’s cold.
  • Harsh clothing: Harsh and rough clothes can cause rashes, and irritation in your baby’s skin. It is always recommended that you use soft clothes on your baby.
  • Detergents: Certain detergents can cause rashes on your babies skin. It is recommended that you stick to a detergent that is specific for washing baby clothes.
  • Shampoos and Baby soaps: Always stick to bathing soaps and detergents that are specifically made for babies. Soaps and detergents that are used by adults may not be suitable for your baby.
  • Preventing and curing dryness: Liberal use of a baby moisturizer multiple times a day could help resolve your baby’s dry skin condition. Child care experts recommend the usage of a thick baby moisturizer, as they help lock in the moisture better.
I would also strongly recommend that you increase your baby’s fluid intake, which helps in rehydrating the skin. Last but not least, you need to be gentle to your child’s sensitive skin. Avoid rubbing it too hard. It is strongly recommend that you consult your baby’s pediatrician if the above methods don’t work well.
