The problem of dark circles today has affected both the young and the old equally. Dark circles can be quite an embarrassment especially when you are out on a social gathering or with friends. Teenagers are normally very concerned about this situation.

Dark circles become all the more prominent if you have a fairer or even a medium skin tone. Though dark circles do not cause any major physical illness they point out to certain areas of our life that we need to pay attention to.
Dark circles may be a result of a variety of factors. Lack of sleep is one of the very common factors for the formation of dark circles. Continuous nights of improper or disturbed sleep result in the body not getting adequate rest. This results in dark circles around the eyes. Stress is another major factor that affects almost all of us today. Due to high stress levels the skin turns pale therefore making your dark circles more evident. Pregnancy and menstruation can also influence dark circles. Another reason for dark circles especially in children could be allergies. Allergic reactions sometimes cause itching of the eyes. Constant rubbing of the eyes causes the area around it to become dark. Besides these, constant exposure to the sun can also result in the increase in the levels of melanin resulting in dark circles.
For some however, it is a hereditary problem and not much can be done about it. Discoloration of the skin takes place as we age, thus aggravating the situation. Since this is such a common problem a lot of home remedy tips are available to help get rid of the problem .

Intake of a healthy and nutritious diet is one of the best ways to help remedy the situation. Make sure that you sleep well throughout the night. A normal person would require at least seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Regular application of creams rich in Vitamin K and retinol will help lighten the dark circles. Lemon juice is an effective bleaching agent and can be of great help in lightening dark circles. Make sure the juice does not enter your eyes as it can prove to be very painful. You could also place circular slices of potatoes or cucumbers on the affected area for around fifteen minutes everyday to remedy the condition. Exposure to the sun should be avoided, and if necessary, care should be taken to cover your eyes either by using a hat or sunglasses. Stress relieving exercises like yoga or involving yourself in hobbies can also prove beneficial.
