How to stop children from wet bed at night?
( 8 Feb 2010)
Bedwetting is a very common problem in toddlers and children. This is caused because the muscles that control the bladder and urine discharge are not yet very strong and this causes urine leakage. There are several steps that you can take to prevent your child from bedwetting.
One of the most obvious and simplest home remedies for bedwetting would be to control your child’s fluid intake. However, you will need to make sure that while your child has less water and other fluids in the evening and night, he/she has plenty of water throughout the day. Do not stop your child from drinking water in the evening and night, but instead give him/ her just a few sips. This will help to quench his/her thirst without drastically increasing their fluid intake. You can also ensure that the child’s last meal for the day is relatively dry and that juices and fruits are avoided at this time. Whole meal grains would be a good option as they have a comparatively low moisture content as compare to vegetables such as lettuce and cucumber. Children love novelty and so you can teach your child some simple abdominal exercises. You can also practice these exercises alongside your child as a daily activity. This will help to strengthen the stomach and abdominal muscles which in turn will help with better urination control. Doing these exercises with your child will help to make this a fun activity and will strengthen the bond between the two of you. You can also try to speed up the natural strengthening of the nerves and muscles of the bladder. This is called bladder training. This basically involves postponing urination by a minute or two when they get the urge to use the toilet. This helps to strengthen bladder muscles so that the child had better bladder control. There will be a few accidents in the beginning, but your child will slowly get used to doing this and soon you will notice that bedwetting incidents will be rare.
Make sure that you do not scold your child as this is no fault of his/hers. Waking up every night can be very taxing for both the parent and the child. Make sure that you keep an extra set of clothes and covers handy so that you spend only a short while cleaning up. This will ensure that both you and your child can get back to bed and get a good night’s sleep.
