Melasma is a condition that leads to the formation of discolored and irregularly shaped, dark brown or gray patches on the skin. These patches are generally seen on the cheeks, forehead and the nose. Although it is not a serious health condition, it can affect a person's self esteem to a very large extent. Melasma has been found to be more prominent in women as compare to men. This is primarily due the actions of hormones, which lead to an increase in the production of melanin, the pigment which gives our skin its color. Melasma can be brought about due to a large number of reasons, some of which are; stress and anxiety, pregnancy, side effect of medications or cosmetics, genetics and at times an improper functioning of the thyroid gland.
