The loss of a few strands of hair daily is absolutely normal as this facilitates the growth of new hair. However, in some cases, the fallen hair does not get replaced by new strands, leading to bald patches on the scalp. This condition, known as alopecia areata, affects hair all over the body but the most obvious surface is the scalp.

Hair loss is a condition that is usually linked with advancing age, but there are a number of other factors also that contribute to hair fall. Genetics play a crucial role in alopecia areata. Hormonal changes, stress and anxiety also encourage hair loss. The condition is aggravated by mounting pollution levels, constant exposure to direct sunlight, poor blood circulation and detrimental lifestyles. Prolonged illnesses and certain medication could also be responsible for hair loss. Hence, visiting a doctor is recommended to ascertain the possible cause of hair loss. However, there are numerous home remedies available for treating hair loss and they are generally harmless. It is essential to keep in mind that these remedies are effective only if followed on a regular basis and can only delay the loss of hair but cannot stop it completely.

To prevent hair fall and to encourage the growth of new strands, it is essential to improve the overall texture of your hair, as damaged hair is more likely to fall faster. Massaging the scalp regularly helps in improving blood circulation in the scalp, stimulates the hair follicles and also facilitates the release of natural oil to nourish existing hair. A hair tonic prepared by boiling a few pieces of Indian gooseberry in coconut oil is an excellent choice for preventing hair loss. It also prevents the graying of hair. Alternately, a mixture of castor oil, olive oil and almond oil in equal proportions can also be used to nourish, strengthen and promote the growth of hair. Covering the head with a moist, warm towel immediately after the massage will help in maximizing the results as the oil penetrates deep into the scalp.

Fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, dairy products, seafood and meats are recommended for the treatment of alopecia areata. Pumpkin seeds, saw palmetto and stinging nettle root are believed to be beneficial in treating hair fall linked with hormonal issues. Sufficient rest, meditation and deep breathing techniques will help in reducing hair loss aggravated by stress and anxiety. Since pollution and sunlight can also aggravate hair fall, it is advisable to cover the head with a scarf when outdoors.
