Causes of hair loss: Several factors can trigger hair loss. They include stress, surgery, pregnancy or age-related hormonal changes. But few realize that nutritional deficiency caused by losing weight can also lead to hair loss.
Fad diets or diets which cause you to shed weight very rapidly, are not nutritionally sound. It can lead to lack of nutrition and lower the levels of magnesium, zinc, iron, essential fatty acids, proteins and Vitamins A, B and D in your body. This deficiency and imbalance in turn causes thinning and falling hair as a side effect.
Remedies:
- The first step is to restore the nutritional balance of the body. Do not follow fad diets or diets which promise very quick weight loss. A healthy weight loss program should not lead to more than a loss of 1 to 2 pounds in a week.
- Take extra supplements to balance the lack of nutrition. A multivitamin with iron is helpful. Also include zinc, copper, biotin, protein and Vitamins A, B and C.
- Eat healthy. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. These have fiber and water, which will further aid in weight loss, by helping the body to eliminate toxins. Cereals, whole grains, legumes, nuts, green leafy vegetables like spinach, mint, cabbage, beet, broccoli and avocado are especially good. Also fruits like oranges, lemon, plums and strawberries. Liver, wheat germ and brewer’s yeast will supply folic acid and essential vitamins. Consumption of eggs, poultry, meat, cheese, yogurt and soy products also help to strengthen the body, and hence the hair roots, thus checking hair fall.
- You may also try to provide extra nutrition to the hair roots externally. Soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and grind to a fine paste. Apply this on the scalp, leave for an hour and wash off with warm water.
- Mix a tablespoon of honey with an egg yolk and apply to the scalp. Wash off after an hour.
- Vigorously rub the scalp with a cut onion. Then apply some honey, before washing off.
- Oil massages are especially good since they not only provide nutrition to the hair roots, the massaging promotes circulation of oxygen-bearing blood to the scalp. You can use almond or olive oil. Coconut oil is also beneficial. You may also use mustard oil boiled with a handful of lawsonia inermis leaves.
- Avoid using synthetic hair dyes.
- Avoid the use of hair dryer, and don’t comb or tug at your hair while it is wet.
