The goals of diabetes management are:
  1. To keep blood glucose near normal
  2. To prevent complications and
  3. To ensure good nutritional status
Diet, exercise, and blood testing for glucose are also the basis for management of type 2 diabetes. In addition, some people with type 2 diabetes take oral drugs (Oral Hypoglycemic Agents) or insulin to lower their blood glucose levels.
People with diabetes must take responsibility for their day-to-day care. Much of the daily care involves trying to keep blood sugar levels from going too low or too high. When blood sugar levels drop too low - a condition known as hypoglycemia - a person can become nervous, shaky, and confused. Judgment can be impaired. Eventually, the person could pass out. The treatment for low blood sugar is to eat or drink something with sugar in it.
Management of Diabetes Type 2 is 3-fold:
  • Food
  • Activity
  • Medication (if required)

Food raises blood-glucose levels whereas Activity and Medications lower them. A balance of these three leads to good management of diabetes. Recent studies have shown that diet and lifestyle modifications are important means of preventing type 2 diabetes, which is linked to cardiovascular disease, amputation, blindness and renal failure and impotence.

Diet should be the mainstay of all diabetic management. In order to ensure compliance, the prescribed diet should be individualized. It must be realistic, flexible, and take into consideration the patient's likes and dislikes, to as large an extent as possible, and must suit the patient's life style. It is important that the patient be educated about the basic requirements of the diet and judge compliance at regular intervals. A diabetologist is the medical specialist who will be able to guide you regarding more details on the course of treatment. Speak to a dietitian for an individualized diet for your specific health needs.
