Kidney Stones Natural Remedies

Can kidney stones be fatal
( 8 Feb 2010)

Kindney stones are an age old urological disorder and a very common problem of the urinary tract. The crystal like stones interferes with the urinary system causing pain while urinating. The pain varies depending on the size of the stone present.

If the crystals are small they may pass out through the urine, or else they settle down and often cause immense pain. The stones are hard masses that contain a mixture of chemicals like calcium with oxalate or phosphate. These are chemicals that are normally part of our daily diet. It is therefore very important to know how kidney stones actually form. There is no definite reason for the cause of kidney stones. Doctors, attribute it to other disorders like infection of the urinary tract, cyst kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel and hyperparathyroidism. The intake of certain diuretics and certain calcium based antacids increases the risk of kidney stones. Excess calcium in the urine leads to the formation of crystals since the urine does not dissolve it completely. An increase in the consumption of Vitamin D and food that is acidic in nature is known to double the chances of suffering from kidney stones.

The primary symptom of kidney stones is acute sharp pain in the back, side, and the area of the kidney. The pain occurs because of the movement of the stones as they make their way out of the urinary tract. Sometimes nausea and vomiting may also occur. If the stones are large you may even bleed while urinating. Besides these you feel a constant need to urinate and may also feel a burning sensation while urinating. The only way to diagnose kidney stones is through an x-ray or a CT scan. Therefore a visit to the doctor is imperative. The best known way to get rid of kidney stones is a change in lifestyle which would include drinking lots of water - at least 2 -3 quarts daily. This increases the urge to urinate and the chances of getting the stones out more comfortably. Drinking barley water when you wake up in the morning helps in flushing out the stones. Besides this, coconut water is also an effective home remedy as it flushes out the smaller stones. Surgery is recommended by the doctor only if the stone is very large or if there is an infection. The intake of foods like fish, chicken, peas, eggs, carrots, pickles, soybeans, and beetroot should be avoided. Avoid all alcoholic beverages and reduce your caffeine intake.
