(20 Jan 2010)
Ulcers on the inside of the cheeks or rather mouth ulcers are an extremely common and unpleasant condition that almost all of us experience occasionally. These painful sores can be caused by a variety of factors, but as in your case, most often from trauma through accidental biting. These mouth ulcers or sores interfere with your ability to eat food and brush your teeth because of the intense pain they can cause.
Eating foods that are crisp or hard, and spicy or salty can be particularly painful.
Mouth ulcers despite the irritation and discomfort they cause are a minor problem that resolves naturally and in most cases requires no intervention. If you do wish to treat it however to minimize the pain and facilitate or hasten healing there’s a lot that you can do at home itself. Try rinsing your mouth with cold water for some quick relief and also do this prior to meals. Make sure that you do not consume any foods that cause irritation like spicy foods or hot foods, and foods that may cause further bruising like hard crisp foods. Avoid rubbing or touching the ulcers with your hand and make sure that you are extremely careful when brushing your teeth as rough bristles can cause further damage and prolong the problem. It may also be a good idea to use anti bacterial mouthwashes to eliminate any risk of infection.
Here are some effective remedies for mouth ulcers:
Crush the leaves of the Indian berry or black plum and use the paste extracted as a mixture in water. Use this solution as a mouthwash, with which you can gargle for some quick relief from the symptoms of a mouth ulcer.
You can also use the skin of a lemon along with white catechu to make a paste by grinding them thoroughly. Apply the paste directly on the ulcer. This is believed to be an effective treatment for mouth ulcers.
You can also consume a ripened banana mixed in curd as a desert. The curd should however be prepared from cow’s milk. This has not really been proven but is quite a popular remedy in some parts.
Try and add papaya to your diet as the fruit is believed to sooth mouth ulcers and promote fast recovery.
There are also plenty of herbal remedies that are believed to be effective. A mixture prepared with fenugreek leaves can be used for gargling, or you could use a solution prepared from Indian gooseberry.
