Remedy for Heart Burn

What to take for heartburns and acid reflux bad burning
(11 Jan 2010)

Health conditions like heartburn and acidity have become increasingly common in recent decades, as a consequence of modern urban lifestyles and poor dietary habits. There are a variety of health conditions that we have come to associate with this new lifestyle, but most of us take for granted digestive problems like constipation, heartburn or acidity. Our digestive systems do bear the brunt to a large extent for our lopsided and unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle.

These problems can however, be corrected very easily with some simple natural remedies and dietary and lifestyle modifications.

Acid reflux and heartburn cause a burning sensation in the chest and although the feeling may be extremely discomforting it is no cause for alarm. The burning pain and irritation usually occur after meals, at night and when bending over or reclining. Acid reflux basically refers to the regurgitation or an upward flow of stomach acids, which causes the burning sensation. This can also affect the throat and esophagus, termed as esophageal reflux. An occasional occurrence is quite normal, but frequent problems of this nature should be investigated.

Under normal circumstances, in a healthy individual the stomach acids can not flow upwards as a band of muscles at the bottom of the esophagus prevents them from doing so. It only relaxes to allow food and liquids to enter the stomach. This condition usually occurs as a result of weakening of the muscles, or because of other factors that can be controlled. Here are some of the possible causes and risk factors that should be addressed:
  • Obesity can be a cause because of excess pressure on the abdomen, so it would be a good idea to shed those extra pounds.
  • Avoid wearing tight fitting clothing, particularly clothes that are restrictive around the belly or waist.
  • Avoid consuming foods that you find tend to trigger heartburn such as alcohol, citric juices and fruits, tomatoes, fried foods, caffeinated drinks, peppermint and vinegar, to name a few.
  • Avoid over eating and in fact try to eat small meals, eating more frequent meals, rather than the two large meals a day.
