Treat Common Cold

What to do for instant relief for nose blockage in case of common cold?
(24 Dec 2009)

Natural methods of treatment, with home remedies and lifestyle modifications are possibly the best and most effective method of treatment available for a common cold or cough. A common cold is one of the most widespread and commonly and frequently occurring conditions. For this reason it is best not treat it with pharmaceutical medications as prolonged or frequent reliance on such drugs can result in other health complications and even cause long term damage.

Natural methods of treatment are a lot safer and effective. In addition to this a common cold is generally caused as the result of a viral infection although also possibly bacterial in nature. The problem is that medications have no effect on viral infections and using antibiotics when not needed simply reduces their efficacy when really needed at some later point because of the development of bacterial resistance.

There are several natural methods of treatment that can help you deal with the problem of blockage of the nasal passages at home:
  • Steam inhalation is possibly the most valuable remedy that is used widely and is extremely effective against any congestion. It clears out the nasal passages immediately and can also help fight the infection, particularly if you add in a few drops of some essential oil like eucalyptus.
  • Try doping a nasal rinse, with some warm saline water. It would be best if you could try out an ancient yoga technique called jal neeti to cleanse the nasal passages. This is along the same lines as a common technique that we are more familiar with as nasal irrigation.
  • Avoid consuming any cold foods, alcoholic, carbonated, or caffeinated drinks and try and have fresh fruits and soups and broths. Chicken soup is believed to be extremely beneficial for clearing up congestion.
  • Dryness can contribute to blockage so make sure that you increase your intake of fluids like water, fruit juices (fresh fruits) and soups and broths.
  • Avoid any dehydrating drinks like alcoholic or caffeinated drinks.
  • Use a humidifier in your living space as artificial heating and cooling devices increase dryness.
  • Warm showers and steam baths can also help treat the problem.
  • Hot liquids and spicy foods are also believed to help, but spicy foods are not exactly advisable for all. Hot herbal teas like ginger and chamomile would however be extremely beneficial.
  • Avoid exposure to any allergens or irritants as far as possible.
