Treatment of Ear Infection

Ear is plugged
(24 Dec 2009)

Many of us, in fact most of us, have experienced the feeling of our ears being plugged or blocked, with sounds being muffled, as if submerged underwater. No matter how annoying this sensation may be, and how tempting it may be to poke around in there and dislodge the apparent obstruction, it would be unwise to do so. There are some natural methods that you can use to unclog the ear safely, without risking damage to the delicate organ.

A clogged ear could at times feel like an excessive build up of ear wax but it is not always necessarily so. You will most probably experience feelings like pressure in the ear, the feeling of restricted hearing due to some blockage, possibly experience popping or crackling sounds at the slightest motion of your jaw, or when you lie down. At times you may even experience pain in the region of the ear that could travel right down the neck.

A clogged ear may be caused due to a variety of factors that could include:
  • Conditions or ailments like a sore throat or throat infection, a common cold, tonsillitis, viral or bacterial infections, a sinus infection, a ear infection, swollen lymph nodes, a ruptured or perforated ear drum, a boil in the outer ear canal, severely impacted ear wax blockage, or even swimmers ear.
  • Activities like diving, air pressure changes and a rapid descent or ascent from low to high altitudes could also cause the problem.

Having a problem of ear blockage or clogging can be more than just annoying, and it may at times affect your ability to function normally, as any loss of hearing no matter how mild does impact effective communication. Here are some tips that can help you deal with and even avert such a problem.
  • If the blockage or clogged feeling is caused due sudden air pressure changes as from a change in altitude, then it would help to chew on gum. This also helps prevent the problem while the airplane descends, as chewing on the gum can help balance pressure in the ears.
  • If the problem is caused due to the presence of water in the ears then it may help to simply use a heating pad or blow drier on low settings to dry up the water within.
  • Swallow your saliva frequently and also yawn as often as possible as it does help to reduce and even eliminate pressure trapped within.
  • A trip to the sauna may not be such a bad idea as steam is actually believed to relieve the problem.
