Sinus infections or sinusitis, as a sinus infection is referred to, is an extremely condition and one that is very often misdiagnosed and even more commonly mistreated. The condition can be extremely problematic for most individuals, and a frequent bother, but it is something that can be easily treated and overcome. A sinus infection involves inflammation of the nasal or air cavities within the skull, and it can afflict anyone irrespective of age or gender.
Children afflicted with other chronic conditions or viral infections are more prone to developing sinus infections.
Patients who experience sinus infections suffer bouts of continuous sneezing and mucus flow from the nose, body aches, congestion, headaches, breathlessness and even fever. Some may also experience mild loss of taste and mood swings. Sinus problems are almost always chronic, which means that they keep recurring. For this reason most individuals afflicted with sinus problems and infections prefer not to rely on pharmaceutical medications as they only provide temporary relief and do not provide a long term solution. More importantly relying on pharmaceutical products on such a frequent basis poses other health risks and long term damage. Natural methods of treatment have therefore come to be the preferred choice.
Here are some natural methods and lifestyle tips to help treat a sinus infection at home:
- Steam inhalation is the most effective method of treatment for any kind of congestion and also for sinus infections. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of steaming water for inhalation and inhale the steam for a few minutes at least twice or thrice a day. There is no harm in doing this as frequently as desired, as it simply helps cleanse and free up the sinus passages.
- Avoid bending your head suddenly as this can increase pain and also aggravate headaches.
- Dehydration can contribute to blockage and congestion so try and use a humidifier in your room, particularly if there is artificial heating or cooling. For the same reason it would be a good idea to avoid consuming alcohol.
- Under all circumstances avoid smoking or exposure to smoke.
- If caused as an allergic reaction to certain irritants, whether airborne or otherwise, avoid any exposure as far as is possible.
- Increase your fluid intakes, with plenty of healthy soups and broths. Fresh fruit juices would also be a good choice.
- Herbal teas like ginger tea or chamomile can also offer relief from the symptoms of a sinus infection.
- Avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks.
