Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is a disorder of the endocrine system. This condition results in the formation of ovarian cysts. The condition can afflict anyone of any age but is most commonly seen in women between the ages of 12 to 45. Polycystic ovary syndrome is the leading cause of infertility and often goes undiagnosed for many years.
This condition can result in a variety of symptoms ranging from obesity and acne to irregularities in the menstruation cycle and hirsutism. Women with this condition are also at a higher risk of infertility as their regular menstruation cycle is disrupted, resulting in the absence of ovulation. Depression is another often ignored problem that women with PCOS tend to suffer from. It is important to keep this in mind as ignoring depression often leads to other problem. Since women with this condition offer suffer from both depression and obesity, it is not uncommon for them to have severe eating disorders. Very often eating disorders are ignored as they are seen as unimportant. However, eating disorders have a very large impact on an individual as it affects their nutritional intake and therefore their health. It is not uncommon for a woman with PCOS to develop a deeper voice and other more masculine qualities. This can add to depression and can wreak havoc on a person’s mental and emotional health. A woman with PCOS has a higher risk of several other conditions. She has an elevated risk of suffering from cancer of the uterine lining as well as Endometrial hyperplasia. She would also be at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and Autoimmune Thyroiditis. You will need to talk to your doctor about your diet and exercise schedule as women with PCOS also have an elevated risk of High blood pressure, Strokes, and Cardiovascular diseases. However, there are a lot of effective medications that are now available that help to offset these risks. In most cases, doctors prescribe medications only if you are suffering from any adverse effects. This would mean that if you are suffering from infertility or insulin problems, the medications would target these problems. In many cases women with PCOS do not have ovarian cysts and can have normal pregnancy and delivery. It is important to know and understand the possible risks of this condition but it is also important to keep in mind that all of these problems can be treated as long as you receive an accurate diagnosis. This is why it is important to go in for regular check-ups.
