Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection that affects at least 4 million people in the United States of America on a yearly basis. Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium known as Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacterium affects the genital tract of a patient and spreads through sexual contact.

The symptoms of this condition may not surface immediately, and in certain cases, a patient may realize about his or her condition only after a year. Although Chlamydia can affect anybody, teenagers are at the highest risk.

The most noticeable symptoms displayed by this condition are, a constant pain or burning sensation while urinating, dull pain in the lower abdominal region, and pain during sexual intercourse. Smelly vaginal discharge in women, testicular pain in men, and an unusual discharge from the penis in men are other symptoms of this condition. However, most of these symptoms may be indicative of other sexually transmitted infections as well; therefore, a thorough diagnosis by a certified physician is a must in this case. Fortunately, unlike other sexually transmitted infections, Chlamydia can be treated very effectively. However, if ignored it could lead to serious complications.

A person experiencing this condition can be reinfected by the bacterium causing Chlamydia. Therefore, a patient is advised utmost precaution and personal hygiene when it comes to treating Chlamydia. It is possible that partners pass this infection back and forth, and therefore doctors advise at least three to four weeks of abstinence from sex. Depending on the severity of the condition and an individual’s personal immune system, Chlamydia can take anywhere between eight days to a month to be completely cured of. Therefore, it is best to avoid sex for at least a month after your symptoms disappear completely. This ensures that the bacterium has been completely eliminated.

In case you find it difficult to abstain from sexual intercourse make sure you indulge in protected or safe sex. You can ensure this by insisting that your partner uses a latex condom. On your part, you can make use of a female polyurethane condom; this will ensure minimum sexual contact, thus reducing the risk of contracting Chlamydia. However, the use of condoms does not guarantee you full protection, but only reduces the risk of developing the condition.

Home remedies help in aiding recovery from Chlamydia. Increase your dietary intake of garlic. Garlic possesses effective anti bacterial qualities that will help in treating your condition and speeding up your recovery process. Olive leaf extract can also help you achieve similar results. Please consult with your doctor before consuming these herbs in case you are on medication for blood clotting or diabetes.
