Stomach aches are among the most common of complaints and certainly the most common grouch, when it comes to digestive problems. This is because stomach aches can be caused by a variety of factors and is not really a condition in itself, but a symptom that could be associated with various disorders. It could be symptomatic of constipation, diarrhea, acidity, indigestion, excessive gas, appendicitis, food poisoning, inflammation of the gallbladder, or even kidney stones and UTIs.
The severity of the pain can vary greatly from some experiencing mild and sporadic pain to more severe and persistent pain that may be almost incapacitating. Stomach pain can afflict absolutely anyone irrespective of gender or age.
Because of the frequency and commonness of the problem it may not always be feasible to get yourself examined by a medical practitioner every time you have a stomach ache. Despite the fact that the best way to treat any problem is with an accurate diagnosis in this scenario it may help to first try some general home remedies. If the problem persists or increases in severity however, it would be wise to seek professional help.
Here are some effective treatments that are used to soothe or treat stomach aches. Most cases of stomach aches are mild and pass naturally.
- Lie down flat on your back and place a warm compress or hot water bottle, or simply a rag soaked in hot water.
- Try and lie down flat on your back, but with your legs propped up against the wall or with some support like a few pillows. This could help get rid of the ache.
- Try and drink some ginger ale or herbal teas like ginger, chamomile, or mint as they help aid digestion and should offer some quick relief.
- Try to just give yourself a chance to relax. Don’t exert yourself, simply lie in bed relaxing. Breathing exercises and meditation are probably the best means to achieve this goal.
- Sip on some warm water and try to avoid eating any solid foods.
- Avoid all spicy, fatty, and oily foods and any rich desserts until your stomach is completely settled.
- Don’t drink any alcoholic, caffeinated or carbonated drinks.
- Avoid consuming any dairy products, as although they do help some individuals they generally tend to aggravate most. Probiotic curd or yogurt can however help immensely.
- A warm bath or soak in a tub will help soothe the ache and also help you relax.
