( 4 Jun 2007)

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a self-explanatory term. It is widely seen in today’s hectic, chaotic world and is fast spreading among more and more young people. It is the bane of the modern world and our advanced times.

To counter high blood pressure, it is essential that you modify your diet and routine. In the case of high blood pressure, one of the most crucial things that you need to follow is avoid certain food products like salt. Let the quantity of salt be minimal in your food. Besides, you need to be careful about the other things that you eat or drink too. Avoid caffeine, sweets, fatty food, fried food stuff, red meat, alcohol and pungent food like spicy sauces, cholesterol boosting and dairy products.

Intake of potassium has been found to be important in controlling and preventing high blood pressure. Potassium can be found in a host of foodstuff such as dried apricot, oranges, dry dates and figs, kiwi fruit, baked potatoes, tomatoes, pears, tomato sauce, raisins, raw bananas, spinach, salt-less dry roasted peanuts, skimmed or fat-free milk, and yogurt. Potassium is also found in poultry and fish. Most of these foods are easily available, so include them in your regular diet right away. Magnesium and calcium are also helpful in controlling blood pressure.

Garlic is also effective in fighting the high blood pressure problem. You can chew one or two chopped garlic cloves every morning. You should also have one tablespoon of flaxseed after this. Grapes are also good in lowering blood pressure. Eat the fruit in good proportions for positive results. Eat more fiber-rich food, whole grains and leafy vegetables too. These are immensely beneficial in controlling blood pressure. Follow general healthy diet rules. Apart from the food mentioned above, you should also become calmer and stay cool in normal as well as in adverse situations. Blood pressure shoots up easily because of overexcitement (usually anger) in most people. Learn to control your emotions and it will go a long way in lowering blood pressure. Practice meditation and deep breathing techniques on a regular basis. They calm the mind and body, which is essential in keeping blood pressure at bay. Regular exercise will also help you to a great extent. Start an exercise regimen slowly, by just walking for about 15 minutes every day for the first 3 days. After that increase the amount of time you spend walking by 5 minutes everyday. Do this for the next 5 to 6 days. After that, start to increase your speed during the last 5 minutes of your walk. Soon you will be able to brisk walk for about 40 minutes a day which will be very effective in controlling your blood pressure.
